Working capital

Definition

Working capital is the money a business uses to cover day-to-day operations — and, as a funding product, short-term capital repaid out of ongoing revenue.

In accounting, working capital is current assets minus current liabilities: what the business could cover right now if it had to. In funding, the term refers to short-term capital used for operating needs — inventory, materials, payroll, bridging a receivable — repaid out of the revenue those operations produce.

It is the most flexible funding category and typically the fastest to arrange, which is why it fits needs with a short, self-liquidating horizon rather than multi-year investments.
