Underwriting
Underwriting
Definition
Underwriting is the process of assessing whether and on what terms to extend capital, based primarily on a business's cash flow, history, and existing obligations.
At a direct lender the underwriter is deciding about the lender's own capital, which is why the decision can be made in-house and quickly. The analysis runs roughly in order: can the business service capital at all, how much of its cash flow is already committed, how long has it been operating, what does credit add, and does the requested amount fit.
