Days sales outstanding (DSO)
Definition
DSO measures the average number of days a business waits to be paid after making a sale.
Rising DSO is an early indicator of a cash-flow squeeze that has nothing to do with sales volume. Tracking it monthly often reveals a collections problem long before it appears in the bank balance.
